Cosgrove Hall
Cosgrove Hall. July 25th 2009. A night that will surely go down in South Australian wrestling history. It was the night that the NWA finally come to fruition, defeating EPW in a series of matches where the winner claimed 100% control of the company.
After a backwards and forwards power struggle since EPW Adelaide’s inception in 2006, the tension finally culminated when at the prior event, REVOLUTION, Benny English fired the NWA Liaison Mark Aiston and half of the locker-room in an attempt to rid EPW completely of NWA supporters. The National Wrestling Alliance had been strong advocates in helping EPW promote shows in South Australia, but certain individuals hated not controlling the company with 100% authority.
Come GROUND ZERO there was only one obstacle for Benny English and EPW to overcome - to take the NWA Australian National Championship away from Jayson Cooper, driving the final nail in the coffin for the NWA.
At the beginning if GROUN ZERO, Benny English and his strongest supporters celebrated in the ring announcing that the likes of The Grahams, Carlo Cannon, Robby Heart or Mark Aiston would never be seen in the company again.
English proceeded to invite Jayson Cooper down to the ring, demanding he hand the title to Slex without having to wrestle. If he did, Cooper would be able to keep his job with EPW. Slex turned around, waiting for Cooper to put the belt around his waist. Showing what he thought of that proposal, Cooper ran at Slex, smashing him over the head with the belt. The remaining EPW locker-room attacked Cooper, beating him senseless, before the fired NWA wrestlers, led by Mark Aiston, burst through the front entrance of the hall, driving EPW from the ring.
Gathering on the stage, the irate EPW made a challenge. Sick of the constant battle for power, and wanting to be rid of NWA once and for all, EPW challenged the NWA to a night where the winner took all. Matches would have members of EPW against NWA, and whichever side had the most wins at the end of the evening would take 100% control of the federation.
Aiston accepted, and the challenge was on.
After some backstage changes, Nick Savage brought Ring Announcer Ben Rosenthal the card for the night. The best of 7 matches began with -
Match #1
The Graham Brothers defeated Dick& Balls (NWA: 1, EPW: 0)
Match #2
Ryan ‘Bones’ Malone defeated Jimmy Scarlet via DQ (NWA: 2, EPW: 0)
Match #3
Damian Slater defeated AJ Istria ( NWA: 2, EPW: 1)
Match #4
Hartley Jackson defeated Robby Heart ( NWA: 2, EPW: 2)
Match #5
Mikey Broderick defeated Carlo Cannon (NWA: 2, EPW: 3)
Match #6
Los Aztecas defeated Sexrock (NWA: 3, EPW: 3)
Match #7
Jayson Cooper defeated Slex to retain the NWA Australian National Championship.
Also breaking the tie, Coops in turn won the deciding match in the battle of EPW vs NWA, giving NWA the victory. (NWA: 4, EPW: 3)
At the conclusion of the event, Mark Aiston offered all who had wrestled for EPW a spot on the NWA roster. He went on to state that he believes that everyone deserves a second chance - everyone except the man he held responsible for EPW's fall from grace; Benny English. After begging for his job in the middle of the ring, Benny English was fired, needing to be escorted from the premises by security. A vengeance swearing English was thrown out of the building, much to the delight of all in attendance.
That, however, was not all for the evening. Mark Aiston went on to announce that the NWA will be performing every night at the 2009 Royal Adelaide Show, before the NWA heads to Thebarton Theatre on Saturday November 14th to begin the NWA PRO Australia story.
